Club Chaplain.
The Wynnum Manly District Cricket Club has appointed a Club Chaplain for Season 2010/2011. The aim is for the club chaplain to assist with the personal well being of the players, coaches and supporters of the club. Whilst coaches specialise in the technical aspects of cricket Gareth Williams has been appointed as Club Chaplain to work with player's personal issues that arise. The role is similar to that of a school chaplain who offers a listening ear.
As a Pastor of a local church Gareth has experience in pastoral care and helping people deal with grief and life issues. Though he has a religious framework by which he views the world he does not seek to impose this on people. He is happy to talk about spiritual matters if wanted.
Gareth is not a professional counsellor so if issues become more than he can handle he will seek to refer a person to someone better qualified.
Gareth is in the process of being accredited through Sports Chaplaincy Australia. He attended a training course in 2009 and received a Certificate in Sports Chaplaincy. He also holds a Blue Card #698502/3 that expires 11/2/2012.
Gareth's aim is to get to know more of the players in the club so they feel like they could approach him if necessary. His contact details are available or players can talk to him at training.
