In-form Queensland and Australian skipper Jodie Fields was in top form on the international stage today but she still could not prevent the Southern Stars from a surprise defeat to New Zealand.

Playing the opening game of the annual Rose Bowl series, Australia went down by eight wickets following a sensational partnership by two of New Zealand’s big guns.

Suzie Bates, who struggled against the Konica Minolta Fire attack when Queensland visited Perth last month, smashed a brilliant century as she and Amy Satterthwaite added 168 for the second wicket.

New Zealand rushed to 2-252 in just 44.3 overs in response to Australia’s 248 all out.

Fields made 51 off 57 balls to save her side from embarrassment after they crashed to 7-157.

She added 80 with Erin Osborne (34 off 38 balls) before being dismissed hitting out in the 47th over.

However, Bates (122 not out off 131) and Satterthwaite (98 off 95) made everything else look pedestrian.

Jess Jonassen opened the bowling and finished with 0-37 off seven overs but the attack was powerless to stop the onslaught.
