Konica Minolta Queensland Fire and WBBL Brisbane Heat duo Jemma Barsby and Tess Cooper will have the chance to push their claims for higher honours in the future following their selection in the “Gen-Next” team for Australian women’s cricket.

Cricket Australias National Selection panel has announced a 13-player Commonwealth Bank Shooting Stars squad to tour Sri Lanka from 27 March 11 April.

Made up of Australias best emerging players aged 21 and under, the side will be coached by former Australian fast-bowler and Womens Youth Coach Cathryn Fitzpatrick, with Victoria and Melbourne Stars Coach David Hemp acting as Assistant Coach.

The squad will assemble at the Bupa National Cricket Centre (NCC) in Brisbane on Sunday 26 March before flying to Colombo where they will play three One-Day fixtures and three Twenty20s against Sri Lanka.

Allrounder Barsby caught the eye this season in the WBBL when she bowled with left and right arm during a match.

A hard-hitting left-handed lower order bat, she took 16 wickets at 19.62 for the Heat in the second season of the WBBL.

Cooper, as right-hand batter, mader her WNCL and WBBL debuts this season.

Speaking following the selection of the side, National Selector Shawn Flegler said: The players that have been included in this squad were all standouts across the summer, with some really impressive performances for their domestic sides and Womens Big Bash League clubs.

Its been really pleasing to see players like Georgia Redmayne and Rachel Trenaman perform strongly at an underage level for the last few seasons whilst those tied to WBBL clubs all played pivotal roles for their respective teams this season.

This tour will allow these players to experience cricket in different conditions and will
play an important role in their ongoing development as future national players.
