The Konica Minolta Queensland Fire will fine-tune their preparations for next week's Women's National Cricket League with the opening round of the Katherine Raymont Shield Women's Premier cricket competition on Sunday.

The Fire travel to Sydney next week for the first round of the WNCL where they meet NSW in a repeat of last year's Final which the Breakers won.

The Katherine Raymont Shield, which features one-day and T20 formats, is contested by Valley, University of Queensland, Sandgate-Redcliffe, Wests and Gold Coast.

Sandgate-Redcliffe, captained by current Australian Women's player Beth Mooney, won both trophies on offer last summer.

Among the Fire players who will turn out for their respective clubs are Haidee Birkett and Laura Harris (UQ), Sammy-Jo Johnson (Gold Coast), Kara Sutherland (Valley) and Kirby Short, Holly Ferling and Grace Harris (Wests).

Valley have the bye in the opening round with University taking on Sandgate-Redcliffe and Wests hosting Gold Coast in Sunday’s opening round.

In the Jodie Fields Shield for second grade, the rookie Ipswich/Logan team will return after tasting premiership glory in their first season under the Hornets banner last summer, defeating Sandgate-Redcliffe in the decider. That competition starts on Sunday as well.

Several players who participated in last week’s Queensland Cricket Female Rookie Challenge, for promising players aged between 14 and 18, will be in action in both competitions.

The Queensland Fire will name their squad on Tuesday for the WNCL season opener.
