Premier Weekend On Show

Fine weather and lots of on-field action was the hallmark of the KFC Queensland Premier Cricket round last weeked. LAURA SCHEIWE and CAM VELLACOTT provide the latest.

Tight bowling, collisions, and close battles for the top spot following round 2 of the Katherine Raymont Shield. A common theme was low scoring matches with the winning teams successful in chasing down totals.

The fixture between Wynnum-Manly and University of Queensland proved an interesting one with an hour-long delay to the game due to an on-field collision.

In the second over of play, Katelyn Beaumont and Nicola Hancock both attempted to cut off a single whilst at mid-on and mid-off respectively; with the resulting heavy contract forcing a halt to play as assistance was rendered.

After play resumed, Wynnum scrambled to 112 led by Caitlyn King’s score of 46 (69).

Despite being a part of the earlier collision, this did not stop Nicola Hancock from taking a well-deserved five-wicket haul. Her Queensland Fire and WBBL Heat teammate Charli Knott was also handy with a tight spell of 3-24 off 8.2 and Charlotte Atkinson’s 2-16.
The second innings was short lived with the solid opening partnership of Emma Jackson (53*) and Knott (57*) chasing down the total in less than 12 overs.

Gold Coast won the toss and elected to bat against a full-strength Sandgate-Redcliffe side.

The away team batted well putting on 178 off their 50 overs. This was helped by Queensland U16 representative, Lauren Patterson hitting 45 off 87 deliveries.

Lara Shanon also contributed with a quick fire 30* off 36 coming in at number 8.

Sandgate’s left-arm wrist spinner, Jess Cremin once again produced a tight spell with 2/23 off 10.

The Gators again made light work of a chase doing so in just 26 overs with Darcy Johnson’s strong form continuing with 49* to get her team over the line swiftly.

Valley was sent into bat at Peter Easton Oval for their first match of the fifty over season following last week’s bye.

Coming up against Sunshine Coast, this was another low scoring match where the chasing team came out on top.

Newly contracted Queensland Fire player, Lucy Bourke returned to her role as opener for the new season smashing 67.

A middle order collapse and two wickets in one of Catherine White’s overs saw Valleys scrape to 193. An economical spell from Sunshine Coast’s Ruby Orchard (2-19 off 9) certainly helped tie the opposition down.

All top five batters from in the second innings contributed with Mikayla Wrigley hitting her second half century in two innings.

A solid bowling performance from Queensland Country athlete, Meg McCartney cannot be overlooked, claiming taking two big wickets before the total was chased with 12 overs remaining.

In men's Kookaburra One Day Cup, the second round of the One Day competition saw Valleys continue their hot form, while Wests, Norths and University also saw their campaigns start with 2 wins from 2 games.

The KFC T20 Max champions Valley had another impressive win, dominating Toombul at Yoku Road. Young left armer Charlie Thomas (4/35) continues to impress for Valley, the former Brisbane Grammar student again leading their wicket takers. Mark Steketee (3/5) was unplayable, ripping through the Toombul top order to help have them 4/30 and eventually all out 142. Valley’s batting had too much class, Usman Khawaja (63* off 87) and Jack Wildermuth (39 off 52) helping chase guiding them to a double bonus point win, 3/143.

Redlands ventured to Jack McLaughlin Oval, facing a full of confident Wests side. Former Queensland and Heat batter Sam Heazlett (83 off 107) returned to form for Redlands, while Jimmy Peirson (65 off 65) went about his business at the other end. Unfortunately for Redlands, 3/196 very quickly turned to all out 236. Steve Paulsen (2/29), Tom Campbell (2/50) and Angus Tolhurst (2/50) spun Redlands out of the match with the help of some excellent catches. Wests openers Isiah Snell (118 off 136) and Sam Truloff (63 off 76) were extremely impressive, guiding Wests comfortably home in 46 overs, 2/237.

Sandgate-Redcliffe continued their improvement, the young side dominating against a rebuilding Ipswich outfit. Josh Creevey (3/37) had the Gators off to a good start with the ball, before Mitch Swepson (3/12) and young leggie Lakshdeep Singh (2/31) rolled through the Hornets batters. Ipswich all out 142. Jack Cooper (80* off 46) belted eight maximums in his quickfire innings. His innings surged Sandgate to a double bonus point win, chasing the runs 2 down and within 15 overs.

Norths travelled down the M1 to take a strong Gold Coast side. While Hugo Burdon (53 off 65) and Callum Taylor (52 off 93) posting half centuries, the other Gold Coast batters struggled on a tricky wicket as the Dolphins were dismissed for 176. Sam Neale (3/17) again showed his elite skills with the ball. It was Norths allrounder Ryan Walker who proved to be the difference between the sides. Walker took 4/28 before scoring a match winning half century (50 off 86), Norths winning 7/180.

University of Queensland continued their winnings ways, thanks in large to an incredible bowling performance from Will Sanders (6/44). Sanders hit the wicket hard in a phenomenal spell of bowling which saw Wynnum go from 2/71 to 8/118. Remarkably, he found himself on a hattrick twice. Wynnum tailenders Sukhveer Singh (46 off 75) and Amitoj Sidhu (24* off 21) managed to get their side to the defendable score of 201. Uni’s Jack Carty (64 off 83) led his side, however Wynnum’s bowlers managed to take enough wickets to stay an outside chance. Ultimately, their total was short of par due to Sanders’ outstanding performance. After a slight wobble towards the end, University chased the runs 8 wickets down.

At the Sunshine Coast, Souths batted first on a tough wicket. Despite their top five batters getting starts, none were able to post a big score, Brandon Faber (38 off 31) top scoring. A middle order collapse had Souths in big trouble as they fell from 4/110 to 9/135, however Saxon Jeh (16* off 43) and Luke Wegner (20* off 30) were able to squeeze their score up to 9/169 off the 50 overs. Oliver Bembrick (2/22), Sam Gardiner (2/16) and Nick Fletcher (2/48) were the pick of the bowlers. The Scorchers batting innings then see sawed, as both sides looked to be in the box seat at various stages.

Nick Fletcher (56 off 34) blazed away with eight boundaries and three maximums, however his dismissal sparked a collapse of 4/6. Fast bowler Chathura Kaluthanthri (4/21) was unstoppable to quickly have the Scorchers 9/127. In a tense finish, Souths finished victors, dismissed the Sunshine Coast all out 149 in a low scoring thriller.
