The Toyota Futures League competition will provide my FootDr Queensland Bulls batsman Joe Burns with an ideal opportunity to test his fitness next week as he approaches a crucial month for Queensland.

Burns, who suffered a groin injury playing for the Brisbane Heat in the KFC Big Bash League last month, was named in the Queensland Academy of Sport 2nd XI squad for the clash with ACT/NSW Country at Chisholm Park, Canberra from Monday to Thursday next week.

Burns is hoping to prove his fitness ahead of the last regular season JLT Sheffield Shield game for the Bulls against NSW in Wollongong from 14 March and possibly a Shield Final berth.

The Australian batting contender was the leading runs-scorer for the Bulls in the Shield prior to the BBL mid-season competition break.

The QAS are in second position on the Futures League ladder, with Bulls squad member Peter Forrest the leading runs-scorer in the competition to date with 581 runs at 72.63, and Queensland contracted paceman Cameron Gannon the leading wicket-taker with 23 scalps at 13.13.

Queensland Cricket Talent Development and Pathways Manager Justin Sternes said the QAS squad had been chosen with consideration given to clubs contesting the my FootDr Queensland Premier Cricket semi-finals.

“We chose not to consider bowlers from Uni, Norths, Sandgate-Redcliffe and Toombul so they could focus on their performances in the semi-finals,’’ he said.

“It’s given us the chance to look at some other combinations – we’ve got seven members from this season’s Queensland Under-19 squad in the line-up and there’s an excellent chance for them to gain some insights by playing alongside the experienced players in the team.”

Included in the QAS squad are the Australian Under-19 trio of Max Bryant, Xavier Bartlett and Nathan McSweeney.
