Jewell finished the opening day 131 not out to be a rare standout for the home side which struggled to break the shackles imposed by a composed Queensland attack.

Tasmania was 7-293 at stumps after the Bulls won the toss and elected to bowl.

Left-arm spinner Matthew Kuhnemann was awarded his baggy maroon cap by Queensland skipper Usman Khawaja before play with Queensland identifying that a spinner was likely to be needed later in the match on what looked a solid batting strip.

After Mark Steketee claimed a wicket in the opening over, Queensland kept the pressure on throughout the day. There were five Tasmania batsmen dismissed in their 20s, but Jewell was the centrepiece of the home team's batting effort.

Allrounder Jack Wildermuth bowled seven maidens in succession in his opening spell and all bowlers had economy rates less than 4 runs an over.

Pacemen Brendan Doggett and Xaver Bartlett each claimed two wickets apiece while Steketee, Wildermuth and Kuhnemann, who claimed Test captain Tim Paine with a smart caught and bowled chance on debut, each took a wicket.
