The Originals have won all three installments for what has become Central Queensland’s showpiece indigenous cricket event.

The 2018 Stan Alberts Shield saw 5 Men’s teams compete across two days in Twenty20 competition at Rockhampton Cricket Grounds, with the Originals going through undefeated.

The Dyillinba side, made up predominantly of local Rockhampton indigenous cricketers, provided a great fight in the final before falling short late in the day.

The Originals posted 8/140 batting first with opener Dale Mutch and all-rounder Brendan McCarthy both scoring 35 runs, while James Cain chipped in with a quick fire 24.

Rockhampton spinner Josh Kemp claimed 2 wickets which saw him top the bowling aggregate for the carnival, while veteran skipper Barry Stanley (2/24) provided a great spell at the death to keep the target at a manageable 141 to win.

Toowoomba left-arm swing bowler Ben Walters produced an excellent four over spell to rip through Dyillinba’s middle order on his way to claiming a match winning 4/23.

Cain took two key wickets including carnival top run scorer Mark Hamilton to ensure the run chase never really got going.

Kemp (21) and Justin Asse (15) showed some late spark to get Dyillinba back in the hunt before Toowoomba captain Kieran Gibbs introduced himself into the attack dismissing both batsmen and wrapping up the 42 run victory.

The carnival also saw three Ladies teams while a host of children representing Dakani, Wandara, Wangu and Dyillinba participated in matches and activities throughout the weekend.

The event pays homage to Stan Alberts, a well-known local sporting great and indigenous Elder in the Rockhampton region.

Stan was instrumental in the formation of Rockhampton’s first indigenous cricket club through the 1970’s and has volunteered countless hours in the indigenous sporting community throughout the region.

The weekend saw players travel from Toowoomba, Ipswich, Brisbane, Bowen, Woorabinda, Gladstone and Cairns with all matches played in terrific spirit as part of the alcohol-free event.

Organisers Team Indigenous Corporation were well supported by Rockhampton Regional Council, Rockhampton Cricket, Bidgerdii Community Health Service, CQID, Deadly Choices and a range of local sponsors.

The 4th Annual Stan Albert Shields is slated to take place Easter 2019 in Rockhampton.
