Thursday saw the final day of the 2021-22 U14 Male State Championships. The 4-day carnival concluded with a rain effected final round, however an all-round performance was enough to see the Western Swelter (MSW & DDSWQ) finish on top of the ladder after failing to drop a single match.

Queensland Cricket’s Metropolitan Southwest Coaching and Talent Specialist Greg Moller, praised the ability of Swelter Coach David Lossberg with his efforts in bringing the side together.

“Whilst the Swelter were fortunate to have several talented players, it was evident that David focused on creating a positive team environment, quickly breaking down any barriers between different clubs, associations and regions”

There was an incredible amount of talent on display, with many results not showing just how competitive the games were. Whilst the Northern Flames (Far North & North QLD) experienced a challenging week, the opportunity to test their skills against their southern counterparts was highly valuable.

Watching on as his team traded shirts with other regional players, Northern Flames Coach Peter Owens applauded the attitude of his side that included players from North QLD towns such as Home Hill, Atherton, and Ingham.

“Our players don’t often get to experience consistent high-quality competition, being so isolated in regional North QLD areas” describing his side.

He continued, “The experience the carnival gave the players will never be forgotten, and whilst we did not win a game, the team significantly improved each round”

It was great to see nearly all 4 days of cricket played at the carnival this season, given the torrential weather that significantly impacted the event on the Gold Coast last year. Queensland Cricket would like to thank the Maroochydore Cricket Club for their efforts in hosting the event, as well as all the coaches, officials, parents, players, and spectators that contributed to a highly successful carnival. The QLD Cricket Junior Pathway program will continue with the U16 Male and Female Rookie Challenges in April.
