Former Queensland and Australian batsman and ex-South African coach Kepler Wessels and and former Australian cricketer and Cricket NSW CEO David Gilbert will spread their cricketing wings further with appointment today to Cricket Australia's Supplementary Match Referees' panel for 2018-19.
Queensland's Donovan Koch has also retained his spot on the Supplementary Umpires' Panel for the coming season.
The umpiring group is comprised of two panels – a 12-member National Umpire Panel (NUP) and a six-member Supplementary Umpire Panel (SUP). The match referees group features a six-member National Referees Panel (NRP) and 10-member Supplementary Referees Panel (SRP).
The NUP, SUP and NRP remain unchanged from 2017-18.

The NUP and NRP primarily officiate in the JLT Sheffield Shield, JLT One-Day Cup and KFC Big Bash League competitions, while the SUP and SRP primarily officiate in the Women’s National Cricket League, rebel Women’s Big Bash League, Toyota Futures League and CA Underage National Championships.
The SUP was previously known as the Development Umpire Panel.
Cricket Australia’s Match Officials Manager, Sean Easey, said:
“All of our National Umpire Panel members had a solid season and we have named an unchanged panel for the upcoming summer, after making two changes for 2017-18.
“With Simon Fry and Paul Wilson seconded for ICC duties abroad for much of the season, it was pleasing to see their peers shoulder the load in our domestic competitions and perform admirably.
“Our Supplementary Panel Umpires worked hard to press their claims for a position on the National Umpire Panel and performed well, but did not quite warrant promotion at this time.
“Three made their first-class debuts last summer, in Nathan Johnstone, Donovan Koch and David Shepard. Our SUP members will have further opportunities this year to continue their development and earn selection to our top tier.
“David Gilbert and Kepler Wessels will come on board as part of our Supplementary Referees Panel, and they each bring exceptional character and knowledge of the game to our team.”
CA has also kept its nominations to the ICC International Panel of Umpires the same for the upcoming year, in 2017-18 CA Umpire Award winner Paul Wilson and fellow NUP members Gerard Abood, Simon Fry and Sam Nogajski.
Cricket Australia’s umpire panels are chosen by a selection panel consisting of Match Referees and Umpire Selection Manager Simon Taufel, former ICC Elite Panel Umpire Steve Davis, and Match Officials Manager Sean Easey.
