Club of the Year | Finalists

This award recognises a community cricket club that actively creates welcoming environments and seeks to create sustainable participation and growth through good governance, volunteer support and inclusive on field programs.

The first finalist is Boyne Island Tannum Sands Cricket Club (BITS).

BITS Cricket Club offers a variety of programs that range from juniors’ participation events to senior competitions and social events for the whole community to engage in. The club has endless volunteers whose commitment and efforts to the canteen, player participation and community add to the growing success of the club. Their dedication towards the Boyne Tannum community and the continual growth of cricket in Queensland doesn’t go unrecognised. Additionally, the groundsmen always go out of their way to ensure that the players can play on the best possible pitch every week. For these reasons, BITS Cricket Club is a worthy finalist for the Club of the Year award.

The second finalist is Alberton Ormeau Cricket Club.

Since Matthew Yiend assumed the role of Club President, Alberton Ormeau Cricket Club (AOCC) has undergone significant transformation, emerging as one of the Gold Coast's most inclusive clubs. Under Yiend's leadership and with the support of community volunteers, AOCC implemented an inclusivity program, enabling youth participation in cricket. The club's expansion in 2023/24 includes introducing Cricket Blast for juniors, establishing over 40's and over 50's teams, and growing senior teams to six. AOCC hosts the annual Celebrity Cricket Match, donating proceeds to charities like Brave Hearts and the Preston Campbell Foundation. Pioneering the Middle Stump Initiative, AOCC aims to involve Indigenous youth in cricket, proudly showcasing the initiative at every home game. AOCC's commitment to inclusivity and community engagement merits their nomination as a finalist for the Club of the Year award.

The third finalist is Wanderers Cricket Club, Townsville.

Wanderers Cricket Club and their small band of hard-working volunteers tirelessly promote cricket in the Townsville region. The club hosts various events like Townsville’s Primary School Cricket Blast, StreetSmarts Secondary Schools rounds, All-Abilities games, and has even stepped in for last-minute events like U12 A Northern Hub Representative Championships. Central to the amazing work of the club is Stan Huen, long-time volunteer who gives his heart and soul to the club. Stan goes above and beyond to ensure ovals are well-maintained for junior cricket. Wanderers fosters a family-friendly atmosphere with activities for all, including Woolworths Cricket Blast, juniors, seniors, and women's cricket. They've also successfully entered teams into Townsville's Women’s League and Social League, expanding the sport's reach. Wanderers Cricket Club's dedication makes them a strong contender for Club of the Year.
