Celebrating Cricket in Schools | Finalists

This award recognises a school, ambassador or initiative that celebrates the connection between school, student and the broader cricket community.

The first finalist is Southern Cross Catholic College, Townsville.

Southern Cross Catholic College (SCCC) in Townsville has long championed cricket, enhancing efforts in 2023/24. SCCC consistently backs Queensland Cricket programs, entering multiple teams in male and female Blast Cups and StreetSmarts Secondary School competitions, prioritizing participation. Chris Horn, Pastoral Leader and Chief Cricket Coordinator, orchestrates games against local schools, often traveling great distances. SCCC's inaugural Blast Program was hugely popular, attracting new participants, reflecting their commitment to cricket. The College's dedication extends internationally, taking 11 students to New Zealand for a transformative experience. Chris Horn's passion for junior participation and values of respect make SCCC a strong contender for the School of the Year award.

The second finalist is Camp Hill Infants and Primary School.

Ben Bourke, HPE Teacher at Camp Hill Infants and Primary School is dedicated to the development of the next generation of Queensland cricketers. Ben runs a cricket academy at Camp Hill for the year three and four group and another academy for the older students in year five and six. Ben runs the academy two mornings a week with a goal of developing student’s skills and teamwork within the school environment through the aspect of sports. Ben aims at the end of the academy program; the school will have a competitive team to compete in the Gala Day either at the school or the local club. Ben and the Camp Hill Infants and Primary is an admirable finalist for the School of the Year award.

The winner of the Celebrating Cricket in Schools award will be announced Monday 22nd April!

Queensland Cricket's indigenous artwork was collaboratively designed by former Queensland Fire player and proud Kunja woman Mikayla Hinkley and Brisbane Indigenous artist, Delores McDonald (“Aunty Delly”).

The centre circle represents the Gabba, alongside other water holes which used to be near the ground. 87 black strokes on red earth represent the wickets taken by Aboriginal great, Eddie Gilbert who played 23 games for Queensland.
