North Queensland Clinches Inaugural Jimmy Maher-Martin Love Cup

In a thrilling encounter, North Queensland Country emerged victorious over South Queensland Country with just one wicket in hand in the inaugural Jimmy Maher - Martin Love Cup Under-16 match.

South Queensland Country set a competitive total of 125, with top contributions coming from South East Queensland representatives Ryan Beatty (19) and Ryan Weththasinghe (18). However, North Queensland Country's bowlers were up to the task, with Rory Franklin and Jack Watson both claiming three wickets each, both finishing with impressive figures of 3/16.

In reply, North Queensland Country's innings got off to a rocky start as opener Walt Lanson fell for a duck. However, the top order rallied, with Beau McCarron (33), Colby Rudd (20), and Jaden Bakurski (19) steadying the ship. A middle-order collapse added tension to the chase, but a late contribution from Brandon Hamilton-Kaurila (16) helped keep North Queensland's hopes alive. With three runs needed for victory, Thomas King held his nerve and smashed a six to seal the win for North Queensland Country.

Cricketing legends and match namesakes Jimmy Maher and Martin Love were present to present the trophy and impart valuable advice to the players. Maher, who leads the Bulls Masters group, encouraged players to pursue their dreams, citing the successful careers of both Love and himself as proof that exceptional talent is nurtured in Queensland's regional areas. Love expressed gratitude to all the parents of the players, acknowledging their frequent travels over greater distances compared to their metropolitan counterparts to participate in community and representative cricket competitions.

All players will now turn their focus to the upcoming QLD Cricket Under-16 state championships at Souths Cricket Club, where they will vie for selection in the QLD Under-17 training squad.
