FIRE SET FOR BRIGHT START | WNCL Underway From Friday

The Queensland Fire will open their 2024-25 Women’s National Cricket League season on Friday and Sunday at Allan Border Field against the NSW Breakers.

The Fire have named a squad of 13 for the pair of one-day matches, with teenage allrounders Lucinda Bourke (Valley) and Lily Bassingthwaighte (Wests) included for the first time.

Sunshine Coast opener Mikayla Wrigley, 20, has also been selected in the Fire squad for the first time.

The trio received their maiden Queensland contracts during the off-season and would make their WNCL debuts if chosen in the starting teams this week.

Also chosen is English international Lauren Winfield-Hill who returns for her second stint with the Fire after making her debut last summer when she played the back half of the 2023-24 season.

Recent Australia ‘A’ representatives Charli Knott, Georgia Voll, Grace Parsons, and Nicola Hancock will join captain Jess Jonassen, Georgia Redmayne and Laura Harris to present an experienced core of players for the Fire.

Current Australian Under-19 captain Lucy Hamilton and former Australian Under-19 allrounder Sianna Ginger will also relish the chance to take the field after impressing during the pre-season in the KFC T20 Max for Sunshine Coast and Valley respectively.

Hamilton and Bassingthwaighte are finishing off the Under-19 Tri-Series featuring New Zealand and Sri Lanka in Brisbane this week.

The Fire finished as runners-up to Tasmania in the WNCL last season.

Queensland will play its opening four matches at home before switching to compete in the T20 Spring Challenge that will serve as a warm-up series before the Weber Women’s Big Bash League next month.

Both WNCL matches get underway at 9.30am and can be seen live on Kayo and cricket.com.au.
