Queensland Cricket and the Queensland Police Service will launch a pioneering initiative aimed at tackling youth crime and fostering community values.
Cricket Backs Adopt-A-Cop Scheme
The Adopt-A-Cop x Cricket Blast Program will be rolled out across South East Queensland, starting with Waterford West State School in Logan.
This first-of-its-kind program, funded by the Queensland Cricket Grassroots Fund, offers an 8-week educational and sporting experience designed to engage young people in Logan and Ipswich—areas facing rising youth crime rates.
The program combines the excitement of Cricket Blast with vital lessons in safety, respect, and positive behaviour.
Each session begins with a talk from Senior Constable Joanne McKinnon, who delivers tailored Adopt-A-Cop lessons aligned with Waterford West’s four Positive Behaviour for Learning expectations.
These themes are then woven into the cricket activities, reinforcing values through sport.
The initiative not only aims to build stronger relationships between police and youth but also supports Queensland Cricket’s strategy of transitioning students from school programs into local clubs.
In this case, the Loganholme Cricket Club will benefit from increased visibility and community engagement.
With plans to expand across Logan, Ipswich, and eventually statewide, the program is set to become a model for community-driven youth development.
A media campaign and interviews will highlight the program’s impact during Term 1 of 2025, showcasing the power of sport and mentorship in shaping a safer, more respectful future.
