Fire Surge To Top Spot

The Queensland Fire have surged to the top of the Women's National Cricket League ladder with a bonus point win today over a determined ACT Meteors oufit.

An unbeaten century by opener Georgia Redmayne in her 50th WNCL match for Queensland, and timely knocks by Sianna Ginger (46) and Annie O'Neil (28 from 14) was enough to secure the additional point and make it four wins from four games in the first two rounds of the competition.

Queensland, defending champions NSW and Tasmania have jumped clear of the other teams as the competition pauses before the onset of the summer's T20 competition block that features the T20 Spring Challenge from next week and the Weber Women's Big Bash League from 9 November.

Queensland will play a further four rounds, with two rounds at home at Allan Border Field, when the WNCL resumes in January.

The ACT again batted first, and while not producing the power-packed start of their opening game, quickly got their batting game into top gear.

Australian Under-19 wicket-keeper/batter Grace Lyons starred for the ACT, hitting 94 from 94 balls as she underpinned another competitive batting total of 9-252.

The Fire made a bright start and with Redmayne leading the way, the home side began to plan for a possible extra point according to the century-maker.

"We got to around the 15th over and started to have a think about what we needed to do in terms of a run-rate to give us a chance,'' Redmayne revealed. "This competition is such a tough one that any extra point you can get could be vital later in the season."

"Annie O'Neil came in and hit two sixes to get us close and we were able to complete a very good team batting effort in the end."

Queensland finished at 5-253 from 38 overs.

It was Redmayne's fifth century for Queensland in her career so far, and her seventh overall in the WNCL.
