Leg-spinner Grace Parsons produced a career-best bowling effort to keep the Queensland Fire in the hunt for a spot in the Women's National Cricket League Final.
Parsons Spins To Win
Parsons led the charge with the ball for Queensland to claim 5-37 from 10 overs as she helped the home side restrict Victoria to 238 in their run chase to clinch victory by 50 runs and hold down second spot on the ladder.
The only downside from Queensland's victory was the that they missed a bonus point, with Victoria getting two runs past the target to prevent Queensland from banking another point.
South Australia's thrilling final over win over the previously unbeaten NSW today in Adelaide has kept the Scorpions on 31 points, trailing the Fire on net run rate. Both teams play their final regular season games on Saturday.
WA take on ACT in Perth tomorrow, with their hopes of a Finals berth resting on wins and bonus points.
Queensland's game on Saturday remains a must-win match.
The Fire's total of 6-288 was inspired by a strong century opening stand between captain Georgia Redmayne and immediate past captain Jess Jonassen, who enjoyed the shift up to the top of the order.
In her 99th WNCL game, Jonassen top-scored for Queensland with 69, after Redmayne (54) had been the first wicket to fall with the score at 119.
There were other eye-catching batting efforts for the Fire, with Australian T20 allrounder Grace Harris enjoying the chance to play a game, hitting 58 from 50 balls. a run-a-ball 36 from Lauren Winfield-Hill and a quickfire 32 from 19 balls by Annie O'Neil.
Victoria's openers Rhys McKenna and Ella Hayward got the chase off to a flyer, putting on 82 before the introduction of Parsons changed the game.
The leggie claimed the tirst three wickets to fall, with wicket-keeper Redmayne snapping up two stumpings and a catch to go past 100 career WNCL dismissals with the gloves.
With Jonassen (2-55) and Harris (2-14) picking up wickets at key intervals, Victoria looked likely to concede the extra point before a last wicket stand of 41 between Hasrat Gill and Sophie Day put paid to that hope.
Saturday's match starts at 9.30am at Allan Border Field with admission free.
