Queensland's Second XI has made a bright start to the season, defeating Victoria today by 237 runs in their four-day Toyota 2nd XI competition match at Peter Burge Oval.
Second XI Salute
Queensland was unbeaten last season in the Second XI format and got their 2026-27 campaign off on a winning note.
The home side fought back well after wobbling at 3-13 in their first innings, before Tom Campbell (48), Scott Palombo (56) and Dylan McLachlan (56) got the innings back on track to eventually reach 280.
Victoria batted positively in their first innings chase before a decisive spell from Zak McDermott put the visitors on the back foot, accounting for the well-credentialled trio of Blake McDonald (44), Harry Dixon (0) and Liam Blackford (4). Spinner Jack Sinfield, on his home ground, then stepped up to take control on the way to 4-39 as Victoria was bowled out for 260.
An outstanding second innings batting effort from left-hander Aryan Jain (pictured) gave Queensland the upper hand. Jain partnered with NSW import Blake Nikataris (59) as the pair built a lead that quickly progressed from handy through to match-winning.
Jain was dismissed for 140, his second ton in his Second XI career, and along wth Campbell (40) and Scott Palombo (61), Queensland declared at 6-392. A spate of wickets late on day 3 and more today saw Victoria in dire straits at 8-97.
Captain Hugh Weibgen ensured the victory with the key wicket of defiant Victorian opener Ashley Chandrasinghe in the second innings, bowling the stubborn left-hander for 79.
Queensland quick Sam Skelly, who bowled with the new ball in both innings, had 3-33 while Sam Geyer nabbed 3-30 as Victoria was dismissed for 176.
