Rising Queensland Bulls batter Hugh Weibgen has turned a silver lining into a rolled gold result with another starring effort in the Domestic One Day Cup competition.
Hugh Beauty! Bulls Breakthrough
Weibgen hit his second hundred in a row in the Dean Jones Cup, channelling the late Victorian's aggressive scoring approach, as he lifted Queensland to their first win of the season after three exciting but ultimatelty fruitless losses.
The 21-year-old opener backed up the 125 he made against NSW at Brisbane last month with 103 at the WACA Ground as Queensland successfully defended their total of 260 by dismissing the home side for 246.
It was his third career one-day hundred in 10 matches and he now averages almost 60 in List A cricket, with 473 runs at 59.37.
The Valley product found a willing partner in Hugo Burdon after Queensland had stuttered to 2-37, with the duo launching a deliberate counter-attack as they took advantage of the WACA's lightning-fast outfield and favourable hitting zones.
The pair built a a 112-run partnership for the third wicket, which only ended in the 19th over when Burdon was caught off impressice young WA quick Albert Esterhuysen for a well-crafted 67 off 49 balls, laced with seven fours and four sixes.
Weibgen modified his attacking approach as wickets fell, although his 85-ball knock featured 12 fours and two sixes.
WA, featuring Australian one-day captain Mitch Marsh making a rare appearance in the black and gold of his home state, were cruising at 1-147 before another piece of Weibgen brilliance shifted the balance.
Joel Curtis (63) was caught by Weibgen with a leaping one-hand effort at point off left-amer Hayden Kerr (3-31) to put the brakes on the WA chase.
Rising quick Tom Whitney (2-41) had Sam Whiteman caught behind for 40 before Will Malajczuk, Hilton Cartwright and Ashton Agar all fell cheaply, the latter two run out, reducing the hosts to a precarious 6-180 in the 31st over.
WA skipper Ashton Turner threatened again to take the result away, with WA already claiming a last wicket win in their Sheffield Shield win last week, before his Bulls counterpart Mitch Swepson had him caught going for another boundary to claim a morale-boosting victory.
Queensland now travel to Adelaide today to prepare for ther next One-Dayer on Saturday at Karen Rolton Oval before switching back to red-ball cricket to tackle the two-time Shield champions at the Adelaide Oval from Monday.
