The opening rounds of the KFC Queensland Premier Cricket competition last weekend produced runs aplenty as the men's and women's one-day competitions took centre stage after the success of the KFC T20 MAX tournament earlier this month.

White’s Hot Form Continues, Lovell Doubles in the First One Day Weekend
by Cam Vellacott
The first weekend of One Day cricket saw some of the top performers in the KFC T20 Max continue their strong form. Emerging bowlers lead the wicket tally, while some familiar faces are atop the run scorers. With the One Day competition being only three games before Quarter Finals begin, this weekends fixture will be critical for teams hoping to push for a deep run at finals.
Batting first at Toombul, Wests Isiah Snell (81 off 102) and new recruit Tom Campbell (87 off 98) partnered for a 177 run second wicket stand. After the strong start, Wests went from 1/189 to 6/196, largely due to Tom Balkin’s (4/59) rapid pace. Wests managed to reach 8/279. Toombul lost a wicket on the first ball of their innings and were looking in trouble at 4/99. However, they surged to victory with two overs and four wickets to spare after an unbelievable innings from Preston White (142* off 115), who clobbered 12 fours and 8 sixes.
Against Norths on Sunday, White again tried his best to get the Bulls across the line. Norths batters Scott Palombo (115 off 112) and Rav Srivastava (74 off 93) laid a strong platform for Blake Maher (56* off 19) and Noah McFadyen (40 off 28) to launch from. In Toombul’s pursuit of Norths 347, only White (97 off 96), Brandon Honeybrook (57 off 42) and Tom Balkin (36 off 45) reached double digits. Connor Sully (3/32) saw a return to form with the ball for Norths, while Noah McFadyen (3/54) took wickets with the new ball before turning to off spin to dismiss the rampant Honeybrook. Toombul were all out 252.
On Saturday, electric first spell between Will Prestwidge (3/37) and Noah McFadyen (4/40) from Norths decimated the Ipswich top order. Norths had Ipswich 5/21, before some hitting from Jake Cross (41 off 18) and Noah Emmerson (45 off 32) dragged the Hornets score to all out 153. Rowan Lutter (2/32), Jem Ryan (3/33) and Harry Wood (2/26) tried their best, however Norths were able to chase the score 7 down.
Wynnum-Manly’s Reuben Burger (56 off 103) and Corey Hunter (77 off 130) dug in on a tricky Gold Coast wicket, getting their side to 7/195 off the 50 overs. Bailey Kenzie (0/30) and Brad Munro (2/29) restricted scoring, while Jackson Smith (3/49) led the wicket takers. Opening batter Josh Kann (95 off 81) was brutal, pairing with Callum Taylor (51 off 72) to all but see the Dolphins win. Gold Coast won with 7 wickets and 17.3 overs to spare. Gold Coast also managed a tight win against Sandgate-Redcliffe on Sunday. The Dolphins bowlers held their nerve despite Sandgate skipper Adrian Lascu’s (65 off 51) inspired innings. Kenzie (4/48), Munro (2/41) and Zac McDermott (3/28) were the wicket takers. Lachlan Crump top scored with a run a ball 80 for the Dolphins.
Wynnum-Manly went down to Wests in a tight match on Sunday at Graceville. Wests set 245, Jared Sippel (86* off 69) guiding the innings. Wynnum-Manly off spinner Grayson Jones (4/26) took three big wickets at the top of the order, including the in form Tom Campbell (31 off 38).
With 10 overs to go, Wynnum-Manly need 71 runs to win with 7 wickets in hand. Campbell then removed set batter Jones (21 off 43). With 34 runs needed off 26 balls, Reuben Burger (77 off 88) played a lap sweep against Toby Matthews’ off spin, the ball paddled in the air to short fine leg. The pressure then proved too much for Wynnum’s tail, Wests left arm ortho Angus Tolhurst (4/32) and paceman Tom Whitney (2/55) cleaning up the tail to win by 15 runs. On a slow wicket, only 2 of 17 wickets falling to pace bowling all match.
Valley recorded a strong win against the home side Sandgate. Spin duo Zanden Jeh (4/39) and Cameron Boyce (3/24) caused a collapse of 6/33, before Valley batters Dylan McLaughlin (50 off 44) and Max Bryant (52* off 28) secured the bonus point win. McLachlan (77 off 126) again led the scoring for Valleys in their total of 210 against Souths, the late order hitting proving crucial to see the score past 200. The Souths run chase was unable to establish any momentum in the match. Valley pacemen Don Whyte (2/30) and Benji Floros (4/26) dominated with the new ball, before Jeh (2/23, 2 maidens) and Boyce (1/24, 1 maiden) were again near impossible to hit. Souths finished 137 all out off 45.5 overs.
University of Queensland also had a bonus point victory against Souths, Bryce Street (92 off 99) and Angus Lovell (110 off 122) powering UQ past the 300 mark. A team bowling effort led by Matt Willans (3/17) saw the students bowl Souths out for 134 in 33.2 overs. Lovell went big again on Sunday against the Sunshine Coast, finishing 125* off 149. Harry Walker (53 off 55) and James Grady (64 off 45) helped propel UQ to 5/305. Former Sri-Lankan U19 representative Kuchu Ekanayake (65 off 68) top scored for the well beaten Scorchers side.
Redlands strong middle order batting guided the Tigers to a defendable total. Experienced trio James Bazley (57 off 58), Leigh Drennan (52 off 63) and Steph Muller (80 off 52) saw Redlands reach 263 in their 50 overs. It was spin to win for Redlands, Jack Sinfield (3/17) and Sam Heazlett (4/25) both bowling extremely economically and taking the bulk of the wickets. Despite good starts from Nick Selman (47 off 33) and Sam Truloff (48 off 67), the Scorchers were dismissed for 186.
Sam Heazlett (100 off 109) returned to the form he is known for at the top of the order against Ipswich. With Redlands only mustering 9/205 off their 50 overs, Heazlett’s innings is all the more impressive. Sean Lutter (3/27) led the Ipswich attack. The Ipswich batting unit again failed to fire, Bailey Stewart (3/28) and Jacob Apted (4/17) ripping through their recognised batters. A lone hand from Jem Ryan (75 off 51) at number 9 saw Ipswich come within 40 runs of victory, however the outside chance at a win from the clouds was too good to be true.
The Katherine Raymont Shield saw some stand efforts as the Queensland Fire players geared up for their opening rounds of the WNCL.
Australian Under-19 allrounder Sianna Ginger had a day out for Valley, scoring 108 from 93 balls and taking 5-29 in their win over Gold Coast.
Opener Georgia Voll hit 178 for Sandgate-Redcliffe against Ipswich on the weekend, while leg-spinning allrounder Grace Parsons scored 126 and claimed 4-51 for Western Suburbs against Wynnum-Manly.
