Congratulations to Gerhard Labuschagne, Volunteer of the Year in Far North Queensland!

Gerhard Labuschagne's tenure at the Barron River Cricket Club stands as a testament to exemplary dedication and leadership.

Over five years, he has exhibited unwavering commitment, holding various roles including president. His impact on the club is profound, spanning from encouraging girls' participation to spearheading Woolworths Cricket Blast Nights and nurturing both junior and senior cricket programs. Notably, his forward-thinking approach is evident in his efforts to enhance the club's infrastructure.

Yet, what truly distinguishes Gerhard is his creation of an inclusive club culture. Shaped by his immigrant background and initial feelings of alienation in Australia, he champions equal opportunity and inclusion, drawing from his own experiences to ensure everyone feels valued. His personal journey underscores the transformative power of sports in building community and breaking down barriers.

Beyond his official responsibilities, Gerhard's presence is felt deeply within the club. Whether spending countless hours on-site or actively supporting teams, his palpable passion for cricket and dedication to the community are evident. His leadership has undoubtedly left a lasting imprint on the Barron River Cricket Club and its members.

Queensland Cricket's indigenous artwork was collaboratively designed by Queensland Fire player and proud Kunja woman Mikayla Hinkley and Brisbane Indigenous artist, Delores McDonald (“Aunty Delly”).

The centre circle represents the Gabba, alongside other water holes which used to be near the ground. 87 black strokes on red earth represent the wickets taken by Aboriginal great, Eddie Gilbert who played 23 games for Queensland.
