A record team score and a milestone individual effort were the highlights of a huge opening week of the KFC T20 Max in the men's competition.
Records Tumble In T20 Max!
After wet weather last week prevented the opening rounds of the KFC T20 Max women's competition from getting underway, the men's competition roared into life on Friday night at Toombul.
With the match streamed on 7plus Sport for the first time, the Toombul faithful at the ground and keen fans online were treated to a stunning display of power hitting as the Toombul line-up including BBL legend Chris Lynn, current Heat star Matt Renshaw and a future Heat prospect in Lachlan Hearne powered the home side to a record score against Northern Suburbs.
Toombul piled on 5-271 from their 20 overs, as Lynn's inital flurry of 34 from 18 balls was quickly eclipsed by Hearne blasting 100 off 44 balls, and then Renshaw thrashing 98 not out from 39 balls. Hearne hit five sixes and 13 fours to score at a strike rate of 227.27 while Renshaw blasted eight sixes and eght fours at a strike rate of 251.
It was a challenging night for bowlers in the dewy conditions, with Norths run chase featuring a dynamic 70 from 35 balls from Victorian import Cameron Hemp and 31 from 12 balls from Hobart Hurricanes allrounder Nikhil Chaudhary.
There was also almost 400 runs scored in the other game on opening night, as Gold Coast (8-211) won a quality encounter against Ipswich Hornets (9-189) under the brillance of the new Baxter Oval lights at Ipswich. A highlight from that match was a defiant 77 from 40 balls by new Hornets recruit Adrian Lascu, with the former Sandgate-Redcliffe player turned Romanian captain banging six sixes and six fours in as the home side just fell short. New Australian under-19 quick Charlie Lachmund claimed 3-42 for the Hornets.
For the Dolphins, a 35-ball half century from the experienced Callum Taylor anda quckfire 30 from 14 balls from Kiwi recruit Brett Hampton set the tone. Young Gold Coast quick Cody Reynolds also claimed 3-31 in the win.
The batting onslaughts continued on Sunday night, again on 7plus Sport, with Brisbane Heat allrounder Jack Wildermuth equalling the highest score in the KFC T20 Max history, with his milestone coming against the other record-holder in the opposition line-up.
Wildermuth smashed 159 not out from 70 balls, including 12 fours and 12 sixes as he scored at a strikeratre of 227.14. His knock lifted Valley to the second score of the opening round to go past 200, as the reigning title-holders scored 4-232 against Northern Suburbs at Ian Healy Oval.
The innings was witnessed first hand by Norths gun Josh Brown, with the former Heat star turned Melbourne Renagdes trump, setting the previous mark in the opening year of the T20 Max when he powered to 159 from 59 balls.
With Norths again facing a mammoth chase, the home side fans were momentarily buoyed when Brown produced a trademark flick off his legs for six from the bowling of tearaway quick Callum Vilder.
But Vidler had the last laugh, bowling Brown for 14, on the way to claiming 2-35 featuring some hostile deliveries. Norths left-hander Aryan Jain showed his class, with an impressive 57 from 32 balls, but the second big chase in a row proved beyond the Vikings.
