After wet weather put a dampener on the opening rounds of the women's KFC T20 Max competition last week, teams roared into life over the weekend with a flurry of competitive performances, as local talent and interstate stars got down to business.
Women's KFC T20 Max Ignites
The stand out batting performance came from experienced WBBL batter Naomi Stalenberg, as she scored a sparkling 107 not from 67 balls for Ipswich as they overcame a spirited Wynnum-Manly at Bill Albury Oval.
Stalenberg's classy knock lifted the Hornets to 3-180, the highest team score of the competition so far, as they held the Sea Eagles to 5-149 in reply, despite a fine 59no from Perth Scorchers allrounder Hayley Silver-Holmes.
Ipswich spinner Kate Anderson claimed 3-19 to take the individual bowling honours from the match as well.
University of Queensland allrounder Tara Wheeler also shone with the ball in the Students' win over Ipswich on the previous day. Wheeler, a former Queensland Fire player, claimed 3-9 from three overs as UQ won a low-scoring match.
Wests young guns Filippa Sue See (2-9) and Lilli Hamilton (2-13) were impressive along with captain Ruby Strange (2-23) as Wests (6-121) overcame Sunshine Coast Scorchers (9-95) at Trevor Hohns Oval.
The Scorchers bounced back in their next game with Hobart Hurricanes spinner Molly Strano, the second leading WBBL wicket-taker of all-time, claiming 4-22 from four overs as the Scorchers (4-140) swept aside a well-credentialled Sandgate-Redcliffe (87).
Other eye-catching efforts included:
- Former Australian representative Elyse Villani top-scoring with 56 from 36 balls for Wynnum-Manly (4-138) as they overcame Gold Coast (8-103)
- Khushi Mistry nabbing 3-18 for UQ (5-121) as they beat Sunshine Coast (8-115)
- Annie O'Neil hitt 56 from 44 balls for Wests (6-135) in their win over Sandgate-Redcliffe (111)
- Ruby Strange taking 3-17 for Wests in the win over Sandgate-Redcliffe
- Ruby Strange hitting 49 from 31 balls and Annie O'Neill finishing 47no from 31 balls for Wests (3-138) as they won a quality clash with the Gold Coast (5-137).
- Lucy Bourke 89no from 59 balls for Valley (3-169) as they beat Wynnum-Manly (7-144), which featured a quickfire 43 from 20 balls from Laura Harris and 45 from 35 balls by Elyse Villani
- Tess Cooper 58 from 49 balls for Sandgate-Redcliffe (9-125) as they lost to a Nicola Hancock inspired University of Queensland at WEP Harris Oval.
- Hancock took 4-10 from 4 overs, while UQ skipper Anlo van Deventer hit a superb 77no from 48 balls to ice the win.
